The Brief

CEM (Capital Events Management) connects public and private investment issuers with institutional investors over a weekend of one-on-one meetings and networking. When they came to us, they had a specific problem: explaining what their events actually are — and why an investor should spend a weekend attending one — in a format that could live on their website and do that work at scale.

A whiteboard explainer wasn’t going to cut it. The target viewer was a sophisticated investor who gets pitched constantly, so the bar for production quality was high. We went with full character animation — a more immersive format that could walk the viewer through the CEC experience as a journey rather than just listing what it is.

The Script

CEM needed to communicate what the events are, what happens once you sign up, and why the format delivers better outcomes for investors than conventional networking. All of that had to land in 90 seconds – the threshold past which professional audiences stop watching promotional video.

The script was built around the viewer’s perspective: what does an investor actually experience at a CEM event? We structured the narrative as a journey, following a character from registration through the event itself, so the audience got a feel for the experience rather than a list of features. Key investor-facing messages were woven into the narrative rather than stated directly, which keeps the tone engaging without feeling like a sales pitch.

The Storyboard

With the script locked, we developed a detailed storyboard that mapped every scene before illustration began. For a client commissioning animation for the first time, the storyboard serves a practical purpose beyond production planning – it gives the client something concrete to react to before expensive work begins. Rough sketches first, then refined panels showing how the character would move through the CEM world. CEM reviewed and gave detailed feedback at this stage, which shaped the final visual approach before we committed to full illustration.

The Illustrations

Following CEM’s existing brand guide and colour palette, we designed a visual language that felt native to their brand. The main character, the event environments, and the overall motion style all needed to feel consistent with how CEM presented themselves in other materials. Illustration and design was handled by Anastasija Glidzic, whose work set the visual standard for everything that followed in animation.

The Animation + Sound Design

In the final animated explainer video, the conference experience comes to life as the primary character travels to and through a CEM event – arriving, meeting issuers, sitting in one-on-ones, and leaving with connections made. The goal was to give the audience an immersive summary of an investor weekend, not a product demonstration. Sound design was composed and produced in-house to match the premium tone of the piece and reinforce the sense of forward momentum throughout.
